Year 7 Showcase
What a great start to 2024! Congratulations to our Year 7 students who presented what they have been learning this term during our Showcase Day on Wednesday 27 March 2024. It was amazing to see our students talking to parents/carers, and Year 6 students from Glenmore State School about what they had learnt. A huge thank you to all the parents/carers who joined us for the event, we hope that you enjoyed learning all about your student’s ‘Place in their Space’. A big well done to all our Year 7 students, with a special mention to our Drama students for their performance.

Harmony Week
Harmony Day and Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, from the Traditional Owners of the land to our most recent arrivals. As a whole Harmony Week at Glenmore was a fantastic celebration across the school of the various cultures and people groups, which make up our Dragon Spirit. Our English as an Additional Language / Dialect (EAL/D) students and our Student Council joined together to create brochures and country displays for the Around the World Expo during Lunch on Thursday 21/03/24.
Whilst our 90%+ attendance rate students enjoyed a sausage sizzle, our Torres Strait Islander students and staff performed traditional dances, and a Maori student, Rawiri showcased the Haka. A huge shout out to Mrs Mann for organising the Torres Strait Islander dancers, and Rawiri for his Haka; it was phenomenal!
PARTY Program
The P.A.R.T.Y. Program is a dynamic, interactive injury prevention and health promotion Program designed for senior high school students. P.A.R.T.Y. is an acronym for Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth, and is an in-hospital injury awareness and prevention program originally established in Ontario, Canada in 1986. P.A.R.T.Y. is aimed at providing teenagers with information about trauma that will enable them to recognise potential injury producing situations, make prevention orientated choices, and adopt behaviour that minimises unnecessary risk.

“Where do I start? Wow, it was just an amazing experience filled with fun activities that directly relates to the day-to-day incidents the general public experience, that provided a clear message about risk-taking behaviours and staying safe. The experience showed us the possible pathways through the hospital as a result of risk-taking behaviours, many of which can be avoided by thinking and planning ahead.
We imitated what it would feel like to be drunk by wearing beer goggles and had to attempt to walk in a straight line, play handball, bowling and more. We also got the privilege to go to the mortuary to get more of an understanding on the tools, how, and where the bodies go. Plus, we got to go into to a simulation room of the ER and ICU, where we were assigned roles as a team to attempt to save the patient, which was a medical simulation dummy.
It was truly a great experience, thank you to the PARTY Program coordinators and the Hospital for this experience.” – Kal-El Evans, Year 11 Student.
Year 12 Biology Camp
Last week (week 9) the Year 12 Biology students headed to Konomie Island Environmental Education Centre (formally known as North Keppel Island) to develop their knowledge and skills around ecology in our local area, as well as build an awareness of sustainable usage and environmental protection of our local systems. Students enjoyed three jam packed days filled with environmental awareness and sustainability activities including, reef and intertidal walks, snorkelling and plankton trawls. They look like that had a fantastic time putting theory into practice.

GlenTech Industrial
This year saw the integration of our Senior Building and Construction, and Engineering subjects into one GlenTech Industrial program. As part of this program students undertake a Certificate I in Building and Construction, Certificate II in Construction Pathways and Certificate II on Engineering Pathways, which they attain across year 11 and 12. This term our Year 11 students have been working hard to design and manufacture a stand for a new piece of machinery in the workshop. We look forward to seeing the finished product.

Here they are hard at work. Keep up the good work Year 11s.
Self-Awareness Course
Throughout this Term our Youth Support Coordinator, Jo Harris, has been working with a small group of Year 12 students to undertake a Certificate II in Self-Awareness and Development. During one day each week, students reflect on their aspirations for the future, set goals to achieving their vision and keep each other accountable in the completion of their goals. The course assists the students in developing a pathway for their future, whilst giving them 4 points towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).

Mrs Harris and students working hard.
This group of students is only one of four who will complete the course this year, under the guidance of Jo Harris. Many have found the course to be beneficial in helping them understand themselves and others. Keep up the good work Year 12s.
Future Pathway Starters
A huge congratulations to our Senior students who recently received their Start Uni Now (SUN) Course results. SUN Courses are University Level subjects which help students fast track their University Studies after completing Year 12. The course subjects are completed in place of a school subject throughout Year 11 and 12.
Congratulations to Trinity (11) and Charlotte (11) who each received a Pass for their Education as a Profession course. As an introductory course for teaching, we are very excited to see these students continue in their SUN studies and go on to hopefully be the next generation of fantastic educators!

Well done Trinity (L) and Charlotte (R)!
Students interested in kickstarting their university studies are encouraged to visit the Senior School Office in the Library.

Navigating Screen Time During Easter Break
Finding balance with screens is key to supporting young people's well-being. While screens offer countless opportunities for learning and connection, it's important to maintain a healthy balance to ensure physical, mental, and social health.
Physically, excessive screen time can lead to a sedentary lifestyle, which may increase the risk of health issues like obesity. That's why it's essential to encourage a mix of activities, including outdoor play and physical exercise, to keep bodies active and healthy.
Mentally, spending too much time on screens can affect concentration and contribute to feelings of anxiety or depression. By promoting a variety of activities that stimulate the mind, such as reading, creative projects, or puzzles, we can help young people maintain mental well-being and cognitive development.
Socially, screens can be both a tool for connection and a barrier to face-to-face interaction. Encouraging activities that foster social skills, like family outings or group projects, helps young people develop strong interpersonal relationships and combat feelings of isolation.
Setting clear boundaries and incorporating screen-free activities into daily routines can help young people enjoy the benefits of technology while also experiencing the joys of real-life experiences. By prioritising balance and routine, we can support young people in navigating screen time in a way that promotes their overall well-being.
Have a happy and healthy holiday break and remember to strive for balance to nurture well-being.
